Transport was one of the key topics when nearly 500 students from 9th and 10th grades across the municipalities of Southern Jutland and Schleswig participated in the cross-border Youth Climate Day in Aabenraa at the end of November.
Everything needs to be transported—but how can it be done as sustainably as possible, with minimal fuel consumption and pollution? This question was explored in a series of workshops where the students worked on concrete solutions to today’s climate challenges.
Focus on the Transport Industry
In one of the workshops, students got the chance to step into the shoes of a freight forwarder by planning optimal and shortest routes, both on maps and using computer software. With support from companies like H. P. Therkelsen and DORA, who provided maps and IT tools, the students gained insight into how small changes in planning can make a big difference for the environment.
Jesper Schimann Hansen, Director of Padborg Transport Center, led the workshop on sustainable transport during the cross-border Youth Climate Day. He was impressed by the students’ engagement and their ability to work on concrete solutions.
– The transport sector plays a central role in the green transition, and it’s inspiring to see how these young people are already working on solutions that can make a difference. If we are to create a sustainable future, this generation must lead the way with new ideas and technologies, says Jesper Schimann Hansen.
