The Danish Road Directorate has just finished expanding the Øster Løgum lay-by (west) on E45 between Haderslev and Aabenraa. The expansion has made room for another 17 lorry parking spaces; there used to be 10.

The number of lorries on the roads is constantly increasing, and they need a place to park at night when the driver is tired and needs to rest. This results in congestion in lay-bys along the motorway, and it has become more and more difficult for drivers to find an empty space and thus to abide by the rest time rules.

The expansion of the Øster Løgum lay-by is part of the DKK 65 million-kroner programme passed by the Danish Parliament in 2021 (as part of the so-called 2035 Infrastructure Plan).

In the Øster Løgum lay-by, grassy traffic islands have given way to new lorry parking spaces, just as an effort has been made to reduce the noise from the motorway. The car park also has a new central traffic island equipped with street light, rubbish bins, green areas with native species and a new retarding basin by the entry.

Aside from the Øster Løgum lay-by, the Danish Road Directorate will be expanding another five lay-bys in the months to come. According to plan, three of these should be completed by spring 2023. They are: Hylkedal West outside Kolding, Tuelsø South on Western Zealand and Rønninge North on Funen.
