With the takeover of the large area by the former power station, Enstedværket, the Port of Aabenraa is ready for a green transition under the name Aabenraa Industrihavn A/S (Aabenraa Commercial Port).

‘The board’s decision to make sustainability the focal point of the port’s development is very much in tune both with the Government’s agreements on climate change and the municipality’s strategy for sustainability’, says Port Director Henrik Thykjær.

‘The Ensted facilities are unique and include e.g. a deep-water port and a district plan that prepares the ground for welcoming businesses which, due to the scale, must be classified in environmental classes 6 and 7’.

The plan is to create a house of innovation in the present administration building open for companies developing and researching waste technologies and recycling. In addition to flexible office spaces, the building also offers excellent laboratory facilities – and right outside is a larger area available for testing research results in practice – ‘a playground for testing new technologies’, as Henrik Thykjær says.

’One example could be a company wishing to explore sustainable methods for transforming waste into raw materials. They may start testing in the laboratory and then build a small-scale production apparatus outside, e.g. at a scale of 1:10, enabling them to test the method before integrating it in a larger structure’.

The area also houses a cooling water duct originating from Enstedværket.

‘The cooling water duct is a good place to test new technologies and research into e.g. removing microplastics from the ocean’, says Henrik Thykjær. ‘It will be possible to build test pools simulating various conditions, e.g. water flow, added cleansing organisms etc.’.

The Port of Aabenraa is already in dialogue with several companies interested in setting up at Aabenraa Commercial Port.

‘Most await stability in the area in the form of a broad political agreement creating more financial security with regard to launching the new, green business adventure. Fortunately, things really seem to be heading in that direction now’, Henrik Thykjær concludes.

At the site of the present coal port, a large area will be made available to resident companies wishing to test research results and new technologies in practice.
