A lot of businesses wind down over the summer, but not the Padborg-based transport and forwarding company Nagel Denmark. They have been busy supplying the Danes with ice lollies – lots of ice lollies.

Nagel lorries are racing around Europe these days to supply the Danes with ice lollies.

Nagel Denmark in Padborg has a staff of just under 80 who transport food and other temperature-controlled goods to and from Denmark for Danish and international clients.

The company’s large lorries carry anything from sweets to cream cheese and bread, but over the summer focus is on one particular item: ice lollies.

In fact, Nagel Denmark transports 80-90 per cent more ice lollies in summer than during winter.

“It is without a doubt our busiest season of the year,” says Head of Network at Nagel Denmark Claus Clausen.

Preparation and years of experience

At the office in Padborg, the staff do not seem particularly busy, though. And there is a reason for that, Claus Clausen explains:

“We prepare for these peak seasons well in advance. We produce analyses and make sure we have the required capacity. But we also have years of experience and are used to the extra pressure.”

More checks in summer

Transporting temperature-controlled goods such as ice lollies across national borders is a technically difficult task. And it does not get any less difficult in summer when the temperature outside rises. Therefore, Nagel Denmark does more checks in summer.

“We check the temperature of the goods when we receive them and we monitor our cooling machines via GPS and integrated alarm systems to make sure the temperature does not change during transport. These are standard procedures, but in summer we are extra careful.

Young staff

Rasmus Larsen works as a buyer at Nagel Denmark in Padborg and is one of the company’s many employees who help solve the ice-cold logistics puzzle. Rasmus is only 27 years old, which is quite normal here.

“The average age of people in our division is low. Nagel Denmark employs a lot of young people, and that makes for a fun, dynamic workplace that I love to be a part of. We have a lot of fun together,” says Rasmus Larsen.

Rasmus’ 59-year-old boss also enjoys working with the young staff. He says the young people who work at Nagel Denmark are extremely talented:

“They are enterprising and enjoy a challenge – especially digital ones. The senior staff tend to do things the usual way. And when we think something is impossible, our young colleagues tend to find a solution,” says Claus Clausen, who has worked at Nagel Denmark for 39 years.

“I am definitely one of the senior staff in our division,” he says, smiling.
