He was actually studying history at Aarhus University. But he was having doubts as to whether he had chosen the right field of study. He therefore chose to contact the haulage contractor DTK, Dansk Transport Kompagni, in Padborg and begin to train as a warehouse and terminal operative. The shift was a success, and Nicolaj Nordsted Sørensen now receives the 2020 Apprentice Award for DI Sønderjylland.

Both professionally and socially, high quality is paramount to this year’s recipient of the Apprentice Award, Nicolaj Nordsted Sørensen. In connection with his training as a warehouse and terminal operative, he has received the highest marks, and in connection with the completion of his training at EUC he received an honorary prize for being a good friend and socially committed.

The work of warehouse and terminal operatives focusses on haulage, stock management and distribution of goods and cargo. And the company’s warehouse manager has been very pleased with the 27-year-old apprentice:

‘Nicolaj is a happy, extrovert and humorous young man. He has strong communication skills, which he gladly uses. His positive attitude influences others, and in addition he is kind and extremely service-minded. Nicolaj is also curious and happy to try his hand at something new as well as to teach his colleagues. In particular, I would like to stress Nicolaj’s digital skills, which he uses on a daily basis operating our IT and electronic scanner system’, says Warehouse Manager Martin Holm Johannsen.

President of DI Sønderjylland Hans Olling is pleased with the large number of talented and committed apprentices and trainees employed by South Jutlandic companies:

‘We very much need them, both today and in the future. If companies based in South Jutland are to create growth and jobs, it is vital that we help train as many talented people as possible. And Nicolaj Nordsted Sørensen is a very good example of that’, says the president of DI Sønderjylland.

Hans Olling also thinks that it is important to focus on the companies that take on the task of training the region’s future skilled workers.

‘Of course the award is Nicolaj’s achievement, but it is also important to praise DTK for taking on apprentices. We need more skilled workers, and therefore it is very important that apprentices and trainees are able to find apprenticeships. It is out there with the companies that the young people understand the workings of their profession and what it is like to be part of the labour market’, the president explains.

Mayor of Aabenraa Thomas Andresen is also happy to be able to celebrate a talented apprentice.

‘There is hardly anything as meaningful as honouring a talented person like Nicolaj Nordsted Sørensen. And based in Aabenraa, he will probably make a significant contribution to the town’s business community in the future. And of course that applies regardless of whether it is as a warehouse and terminal operative, a carpenter, a glazier or an aircraft mechanic, and the job involves stock management, operating a workbench, using a hairdresser’s scissors or wearing a chef’s hat’, the mayor said.

On Thursday 17 September Nicolaj Nordsted Sørensen received the 2020 Apprentice Award for DI Sønderjylland.
